Introducing The Super Mario Sunshine Switch Review For Beginners

The sequel to Super Mario 64 is here!  If you were looking for more of your favorite pudgy plumber hopping, skipping, and jumping around the place then look no further than Super Mario Sunshine!  The next step in Mario’s 3D adventuring Platform Games has arrived and presents unique challenges, difficult minigames, and one of Mario’s strangest outings in his 35 years of life!

No One Relaxes In The Mushroom Kingdom!

HEY! Stop Relaxing!

Super Mario Sunshine begins with Mario, Princess Peach, and Toadsworth [his first appearance!] flying on Peach’s private jet!  As they approach a Dolphin shaped island, a video pops up on the screen they’re all sitting in front of.  They are then presented with a gaggle of Piantas, the natives of Isle Delphino which appears to be their destination.  It informs them of the food they can eat, the fun they can have, and the relaxation that can occur.  As the video progresses, Princess Peach notices a familiar, and at the same time, mysterious figure making appearances throughout the video.  Toadsworth and Mario, distracted by the relaxation and food opportunities respectively, notice nothing.

The plane comes in for quite the landing; having to stop early on the Airstrip due to some funky colored Goo that is occupying a great amount of space on the strip.  Toadsworth tasks Mario with finding out what’s going on from the Piantas on the other side of the goo.  On his way to gather information, Mario meets a machine bearing a strange but somehow familiar logo: F.L.U.D.D.  After a quick intro video, it’s time to take on the goo-monster threatening your vacation.  Unfortunately, relaxation is far off as the Isle Delfino Police Force show up just after Mario cleans up.  Thus beginning Mario on one of his strangest adventures ever to clear his name, stop his doppleganger, and figure out more about the strange things happening on Isle Delfino!

Clean-up Crew

I will never look at rainbow sherbet the same way again

Super Mario Sunshine is, quite possibly, Mario’s strangest adventure ever.  Super Mario games are very reliant on their favorite Plumber being able to traverse the world on his own.  He is given various types of jumps, dashes, and attacks in order to be able to do so, however, Sunshine breaks these common conventions by strapping F.L.U.D.D. to Mario’s back.  This new water-spraying weight on Mario’s back may limit his movements but only expands the horizons on which Mario can now explore!

Instead of long jumps, high jumps, and throwing punches, most attacks and movements that extend beyond Mario’s own abilities, are relegated to F.L.U.D.D.  You’ll need it to fight bosses, stun enemies, bridge gaps, climb buildings, and to reveal coins and secrets.  While Mario is definitely the flagship character of this game, the real star becomes F.L.U.D.D. as you realize just how much you need it throughout the game.

Final Thoughts

Let’s Get Wet!

Super Mario Sunshine is certainly an odd duck among the Super Mario Adventuring-Platformer games and it offers the player a fresh new way to process Mario’s whole adventure.  You are not just a red had-clad plumber anymore.  You do more of your actual job title in this game than you ever have in a Mario game by cleaning up goo wherever it shows up, unclogging pipes, and taking down Bowser once more in this epic adventure.  Equip F.L.U.D.D., collect those shine sprites, and track down Shadow Mario because you have a sinister plot to uncover!

Pros:

  • F.L.U.D.D. makes travel more interesting to move around in
  • Many fun characters are introduced
  • One of Mario’s most creative adventures

Cons:

  • Mario feels mighty useless without F.L.U.D.D.
  • Blooper Races
  • Dodgy Physics
