Intro

Whenever I buy new portable hardware, I scour countless sources to find the best carrying case. I rarely buy one at the same time as my electronic acquisition as I typically find the counter price to be much higher for an inferior product. When it comes to gaming systems, I’m even more picky. Back when I was sporting a PSP and later a PS Vita, I found that an improper protective case could lead to what is now commonly called, Joy-Con drift. Of course that term wouldn’t apply to my Vita, but you get the picture. I went through several Sony units which suffered from a drifting analog stick before I came to the conclusion the fault was in the case I was using. Hence, my careful selection process with my Nintendo Switch. I was recently sent a review case from PowerA and I was eager to put its protection to the test. Continue reading to see my thoughts on the Pokémon Expressions Protection Case.

Out of the Box

At first glance, the Pokémon Expressions case is charming. It features simple stylings of fan favorite pokémon faces. Between Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Pikachu and Eevee there are a handful of facial expressions. Scattered with occasional dots of color on a white background, the case has no shortage of personality.

I was a little worried that the white casing would be prone to easy staining. After my time with the protective carrier, that wasn’t the case. Granted I wasn’t getting out of the house a whole lot so my testing was somewhat simulated in my backyard. One thing I did notice is that a crease existed near one of the corners of the case. I never applied too much pressure so it’s unclear what caused the wrinkle, but it gives it a worn and battered appearance. The bottom of the case is a sheen black foam. The only problem I experienced on the bottom section is that it would attract thumb and finger prints far too easily from my sticky fingered kids. This clearly is an issue for any case, but the Expressions case took a little extra work to clean off.

The inside boasts a sturdy mesh pouch for holding smaller accessories like the Joy-Con rails or charging cords. The inner zipper and threading use a vibrant blue color which really stands out. As basic as the inside of a case can be, these colors were a welcome sight and I really enjoyed the stitching. Overall, I was impressed with the look of the Pokémon Expressions case despite the few wrinkles.

And Into the Case

Image is one thing for a case. It’s great to be able to walk into a room with some eye candy containing your Nintendo Switch, but it’s another matter if it doesn’t actually protect it. With the few excursions I tested with this case, it held up admirably. Whether tossed into my backpack or held by its handle it kept my Switch safe and secure. The Switch itself fits snug into the case and has a tight flap with easy-to-use velcro to hold it in place. The fit was great and I never felt any wiggle or give from within. Likewise, the interior holds nine game cartridges with equal fastness.

Perhaps my favorite feature of this PowerA Protection Case is the fact that the sides are sturdy and don’t cause collapse onto the protected goods. I felt confident that my Joy-Con were safe and I wouldn’t have to worry about consistent pressure leading to unwanted drift.

Final Thoughts

Though there were a few aesthetic issues that cropped up during my time with the Pokémon Expressions Case, I was thoroughly impressed with its quality and durability. The zippers are easy to grasp and open and close smoothly. The handle is tightly secured with a nice rubberized grip. The corners are notched giving additional space on the inside for the Joy-Con triggers and also act as an even stand. As the price is comparable with similar cases on the market I would absolutely recommend it to any Nintendo Switch owner, especially if you’re a fan of the Pokémon series.

Pros

  • Beautiful Minimalist Design featuring Pokémon
  • Durable Build
  • Safely Secures Nintendo Switch

Cons

  • Prone to Dirt and Smudges
  • Material can Crease

Verdict
The PowerA Pokémon Expressions case is exactly the type of case I look for on the market with its quality build and durable design.
