Racing Extravaganza!

There now appears to be a whole array of Kart Racers on the Nintendo Switch and, some might say, a little too much choice. Which Kart Racer is best? Which Kart Racers are fun? I mean, I can’t answer those questions for you right now but I can tell you about Crash Team Racing. So, let us get into it!

It’s crazy to think that Crash Team Racing originally released back in 1999, and it was so much fun then! Now, in 2019 Crash Team Racing is back and it’s been fully remastered in full HD. But, is it just as fun as we remember? The short answer is YES!

Start Your Engines!

So, we’ve established Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a Kart Racer but it isn’t just racing for some trophies like most, through Adventure mode there is actually a story – it’s a very brief and simple story – but it’s a story none the less. You’re racing to save the planet from destruction… It makes sense if you play it.

Not only does the game have a story, but it also has a sort of, hub world, in which you can drive around as you wish. You will start out with only a couple of races unlocked, but as you complete each race – by complete I mean come 1st, and only first – you will unlock more races and more of this hub world to explore. Unlocking more characters and more goodies along the way.

Speaking of the characters, there are a whopping 26 characters to play and unlock throughout the course of the game, 15 of which were in the original CTR. Each character has their own various skins to unlock also and while we are at it, why don’t I tell you how many tracks you’re going to be racing on? 31 in total! 18 of those you will experience throughout Adventure Mode.

Pimp My Ride

As well as having various skins for your characters you also have various customisation options for your kart too! I love me a bit of customisation! You will unlock many bodies for your kart as well as distinct wheels, stickers and even paint jobs! Customise to your heart’s content and make your dream… kart?

Oh, and if you see a set of wheels that you really want to get your hands on, don’t worry! It will even tell you how to unlock it! Easy peasy, right? Okay, sometimes it’s a little more complicated than just playing the game. Certain items or characters will only be unlocked from the Pit Stop or the Grand Prix. The Pit Stop is the games very own store containing various items for a limited amount of time. You can purchase said items with the Wumpa coins you earn from playing the game – be mindful of the fact you can only earn Wumpa Coins whilst connected to the server – be quick, they’re not on there for long. The Grand Prix is a themed seasonal event that allows players to unlock even more goodies! As if there wasn’t enough already! But, more on that later.

Too Hot To Handle?

Much like the original, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is incredibly tough. With three difficulty levels to choose from; Easy, Medium and Hard you would think that would be exactly what it is.. but instead, it feels like; Easy, Hard and Ridiculous. Get my point? It makes it even more infuriating that you have to come 1st in every race, unlike many other Kart Racers.

The key to winning in CTR is learning how to use the boost effectively. It can be pretty confusing at first, but once you have it you’re golden. Let me try to explain this without sounding crazy and confusing you… So, you know how in Mario Kart if you drift around a corner you get a slight speed boost? And the longer you hold that drift the bigger the speed boost will be? Well, forget about that. In CTR you too can drift around corners, but in order to gain any kind of boost from it you have to press the opposite boost button at a certain time… you can do this up to three times in one single drift. I know, it’s confusing but I tried.

The Mighty Grand Prix!

Now onto that Grand Prix, I was telling you about. Shortly after the game’s release, Activision introduced the very first Grand Prix to us! What an exciting time! As I said earlier, it’s a themed seasonal event where you can unlock various items just by playing the game. Imagine Fortnite’s Battle Pass tiers but without having to actually spend any money.

It consists of a heck load of challenges to complete, some that change daily and weekly. Complete those challenges to earn yourself Nitro Points; the more Nitro Points you earn, the more rewards you will earn. You can even unlock yourself new characters and Karts. It adds a hell of a lot more content and keeps people engaged, I think.

Eat My Dust!

It’s fair to say that Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled has undergone a massive graphical update. To be honest, it looked stunning. Especially compared to what it originally looked like. Every character, every kart, every track is bursting with detail and trust me when I say you should really try to slow down and just admire the surroundings. If you take anything from this review, let it be that.

The same can be said about the game’s soundtrack, fantastic. Just as good as I remember, if not better. Each song is bouncy and fun, the perfect combination for kicking people’s butts in a race.
