Assemble your ultimate team of Marvel superheroes with a roster of over 30 playable characters from across the whole Marvel Universe. The third instalment in the series sees the addition of Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales and Falcon also with the inclusion of accessible gameplay, it means that no matter your gaming ability, anyone can take on Thanos.

When it was time to play Ultimate Alliance we were told to get into groups of four. Once we were given our Pro Controllers you could instantly see on peoples faces the eagerness to quickly pick their favourite character hoping no one would get there first. After aimlessly navigating the character select screen in a hurry to pick my personal favourite, there was a sense of joy knowing that Star-Lord was ready to fight. Being able to play Ultimate Alliance in co-op mode made the experience so much fun and it changed my views on the series as a whole. With only playing a snippet of Ultimate Alliance the full game will have you travelling across iconic locations throughout the MCU to collect the infinity stones in a new original story line.

As you battle through and fight enemies you can fill up your extreme gauge. Once full you can execute an extreme attack to help you along the way but if you are playing in co-op and all 4 players have filled their gauge an Alliance Extreme can be activated, causing major damage to your foes. If you join forces you can also destroy obstacles and access hard to reach areas, so working together as a team definitely has its perks. There was a great sense of achievement when all four players had filled their gauge and it was time to activate an Alliance Extreme to annihilate our enemies. There was a split moment in which I completely forgot that this was the first time I was meeting the other three players, let alone playing a co-op game together.

The Ultimate Alliance series was under my radar when 1 and 2 were released due to not being into the whole superhero scene and only really getting invested well into phase 2 of the MCU when Guardians of the Galaxy was released, so being able to play 3 on my visit to Nintendo was a whole new experience to me. The gameplay and fighting style was your typical hack and slash with a top-down view that seemed to have a 45-degree angle so you could see more of the horizon, which worked well with seeing enemies approaching in the distance and getting a feel for the environment in general. with only spending 15ish minutes with the game it wasn’t enough time to master the controls so it ended up in a button-bashing frenzy. The gameplay was smooth but felt overcrowded in places and became slightly confusing as to where your character actually was and who you were aiming at.

The first 2 games were available across all platforms and were published by Activision but this time around Nintendo have taken the reigns making it a Switch exclusive with the help of Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja who were responsible for the Ninja Gaiden series. Not only will The Black Order be available on the Switch there will also be DLC released in the coming months with the first drop being made available in Autumn 2019. The DLC packs will contain new content such as playable characters, modes, and additional story.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will be hitting the E-shop and Shelves on 19th July 2019.
