[Nintendad Coffeehouse] A Year of Caffeine. The Top Nintendad Coffeehouse Pieces from this Year

Written by Mel Curtis

It’s been just about one year since the start of the Nintendad Coffeehouse. Even though the official anniversary is next month, I thought it would be nice to give everyone an idea of what some of the best places to start are. So here you go! Your primer of how to get into this amazing set of writing, your top 7 Nintendad Coffeehouse pieces!

SUPER MARIO 3D ALL-STARS

One of the more recent ones that I have to tip my hat to is the series of Retrospectives that we had on the games contained in the 3D collection (including the excluded Mario Galaxy 2). It might be cheating for me to put this whole series here as an entry, but I’m going to do it anyway because it was one of my favourite reads at the time it was coming out. I was actually very inclined to put down the 2 Day of 2K series from earlier this year as well, but those aren’t technically Coffeehouse pieces! Either way, if you’re looking to get a little blast from the past on your own breaks from these nostalgia-filled treasures, this is a great read!

THE ARCHAIC STATE OF NINTENDO’S ONLINE SERVICES

Let’s be honest, Nintendo fans love to complain about Nintendo making weird choices just as much as we love playing their games. Here’s a great place to get the catharsis of second-hand annoyance at the way that Nintendo’s online isn’t always making all the moves that we would like to see from them. We criticise Nintendo because we want them to be better. There’s plenty of pieces about this subject because there is plenty to criticise, but this is a good place to get your first taste.

NINTENDO SWITCH AND THE PURPLE OCEAN THEORY

NINTENDO SWITCH AND THE PURPLE OCEAN THEORY

One of the first Coffeehouse pieces, this is one of the ones that shaped what this series would become. All of us have seen the ups and downs of Nintendo as they seem to swing wildly back and forth with each console generation, but it’s good to have an idea and a theory to put with that phenomenon. Looking into the reasons why things go the way they do in retrospect really gives a lot of perspective to where we might be heading.

THE POWER OF A MAP

THE POWER OF A MAP

I think we sometimes forget to appreciate the little things when it comes to game design, taking so much for granted or thinking it is entirely needed for a game to function at all. This look deeper into games and maps is just exactly what I needed to remind me of just how much a map can do for a game.

I SOLD AN ANIMAL CROSSING VILLAGER FOR A MILLION BELLS

I SOLD AN ANIMAL CROSSING VILLAGER FOR A MILLION BELLS

I feel like a jerk putting one of my own pieces on here, but it is the one I am most proud of and it was suggested to me as one to add when putting together this list. It’s always interesting to take a look into the subcultures that spring up around Nintendo games. With Animal Crossing being such a big part of quarantine for so many people, this social aspect of the game is one of the more fascinating to take a look at.

SHADY POKÉMON DEALS

SHADY POKÉMON DEALS

This might just be because I love Pokémon, but this is one of my favourite recent pieces. Once again this is about one of those storage cultures that spring up around a Nintendo game, but it’s also one that actively skirts the rules of the game, making it even more scandalous. The investigative work here is brilliant too, definitely worth a read!

ADMITTING I WAS WRONG ABOUT NINTENDO

A lot of us have a time where we fell away from a certain games company or even from gaming as a whole. So many of us have these stories and here’s another journey for you to hear about. Maturity is a subjective thing and it’s okay for you to like something “childish”. It’s always good for us to remember that.
