The Nintendo Switch has been on the market for almost 2 years now and while there are a few alternatives to the official Pro controller, nothing offers one of the key features of the Nintendo product, gyroscopic aiming.
In all honesty, the official product aside, literally every other model that I’ve tried is incredibly heinous, either being cheap and plastic or cumbersome and uncomfortable.
PowerA have entered the market with a genuine contender for the best wireless controller for Nintendo Switch.
With a retail price of £39.99, it already stands out by being 1/3 of the price cheaper than the official offerings. However, this does come with a couple compromises. Firstly, the Enhanced Wireless Controller does not have a built in battery and therefore require 2 X AA. In fairness, there were 2 provided in the box to get me up and running and after over 20 hours of use I haven’t had to change them.
Aside from the price point, the most endearing aspect of the Enhanced Wireless controller is the performance of the D pad. Unlike Nintendo’s own offerings, PowerA have ensured that whichever direction you press is snappy and feels sharp and the input is responsive to boot, perfect for tricky precision retro gaming.
Unfortunately however, the rest of the buttons feel a little bit plastic and slightly cheap, which, paired with the weight of the pad, makes the whole unit feel a little lightweight in comparison.
The mappable buttons are a great little addition and certainly in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it can be a real game changer, flicking out your pinky to jump or land a grab in the most perilous of moments.
The aesthetics of the Enhanced Wireless controllers are full of charm and charisma and much like the wired product that I previously reviewed, there are so many different styles to match your look or mood. There literally is something for everyone here.
The entire range is really quite nice. From the standard red and black, to the model that I reviewed, an elf green embossed with a silhouette of a legendary hero, atop a mighty steed, this range is classy and refined. As an officially licensed product, PowerA have been given an opportunity to draw upon Nintendo’s fantastic range of IPs, which they have greedily grabbed with both hands. The inspiration that they draw on is so iconic that it really stands out and makes this product a class above.
Of all the 3rd party controllers on the market for Nintendo Switch, this is hands down the best model available. Compared to The official pro controller, D-pad and price aside, it falls a little short but that’s not to say that this item isn’t deserving of your time and attention.
The Enhanced Wireless controller is the quintessential option for your traditional gaming needs on Nintendo’s hybrid system and undoubtedly the best option, Pro controller withstanding.
